Art and Music as Brain Conductivity

In hard times the first thing that School Systems
cut are the arts and especially Music.They do this because they percieve
that these classes are unnessasary.They do this because they are unaware
of the vital role that Art and Music play in creating better student's.
Thousands of tests all show the same result.Students who are
exposed to Art and music learn much more rapidly than those who
have been givin' no art or music instruction.The quickist way to way
to reduce the percentage of students who do well in thier studies is
to eliminate Arts and Music from the curiculum.
This fact is based on decades of testing and study and every time
the students who had Art and music available to them did better in all
thier studies than those who did not !
Why is it that Art and music play such a vital role in getting the most
Students to excell ?
It's appears that art and music activate brain activity more than
every other subject combined.MIR scans show that it is only art and
music that light up every part of the human Brain.
Why is it that only art and music can activate the brain so completely?
One reason i believe is that a painting or a Great piece of music are both
very complex and so it takes all of the Brain's power to decipher either
one.{i.e. it's not like mowing the lawn or taking out the garbage}
So i guess you could say that Art and Music act as lightswitch's
for the Brain.When the light switch is turned on we see an incredibly
complex world-seemingly infinatly complex.When the light swith is
turned off-we see very little but darkness all around.We never learn
how to understand complex idea's and so the world makes little sense
to us;and eventually we give up trying.

"The Look's" Never Were A Garage Band

"The Look's" never were a garage band.Our biggest audience at
the peak of our popularity here in Boise,were Jr. High and High School Students.
To them we were just a Rock' n Roll Band.Nobody ever called the music we played
Garage Band music,Frankly,because we didn't play any garage band songs.Unlike
All the other bands on The Voxx Album-"The Battle of the Garages" our song
wasn't a remake of a old Garage Band song and the style of the song owes alot
more to Devo,Television and The Clash.Those were the bands that inspired
me to write "Look Out Below"not any old 60's Garage Band.Our song got put
on the album completely by accident.We didn't know anything about the
Contest.We were just sending out the Demo tape we'd made to all sorts of
Label's and our Drummer-Lenny Montoya suggested we send one to Bomp.
I'd never heard of Bomp but Lenny grew up in East L.A. so he was familiar
the label,Lenny knew alot of things about L. A. that Mitch and i didn't so i
just said O.K.-If Lenny thinks it's a good idea to send a copy of our demo
To this Label in L.A.-He knows alot more about L.A. than i do so i just took
him at his word that it was a good label to send our demo to-and so we did.
So that's how we got labeled as a garage band.Because "Look Out
Below' got chosen by Greg Shaw to be on the Album.It was the first time we'd
ever been called a garage band.The Demo also had "Are You Gonna Be My Girl"
on it.The first time i called Greg he said "Pete Holly amd the Look's ? "Oh Yeah,
your the band with the Merseybeat Song".That's when i talked Greg into letting
us record a single.I think Greg knew all along that we really weren't like any of the
other bands on "The Battle of the Garages".The Demo tape we'd sent to him had
three original songs on it.I wrote,arranged and Produced all three of them and
none of them were garage band songs.The style of the songs on the Demo tape
were the style of my own that i'd developed over 10 years of songwriting.My
Biggest influences were Mott the Hoople,The Beatles,The Who,Bob Dylan,
Todd Rundgren,and The Beach Boys.
We were the only band that Greg put on both "The Battle Of Garages"
and the compilation album "Expieriments in Destiny" which contained recordings
that sounded more modern.He put the version i had produced on the "Battle" album
and he put the studio version on "Expieriments in Destiny".So i believe Greg knew
all along that we were a band that could play many differant styles-because we were.
The only label he ever put on my music was when he wrote me a letter and it said
i still had that "cool sound".
So that's the true version of what really happened and who our infuences
really were.What can i say-things just happened the way they happened.I was
allways just trying to write the best songs i could.I didn't have any control-and
i still don't-over what label gets put on them.

A SIMPLE TWIST OF FATE

Before i ever had a band,i had been playing guitar for many,many years.By the time i
was 17 i'd been playing guitar for 6 years.I played alot when i was younger.No one ever had
to tell me to practice.I would just start playing guitar and before i knew it hours had past.
For 6 years i would practice,but i didn't think of it as practicing for at least several hours
a day and some times longer.I didn't just play the guitar-i would get so into the music
that i literally forgot about everything else.I also was writing songs at this time.In fact
from the very begining of my guitar playing i was allready making up original songs.
For nearly all of my early guitar playing day's and certainly for all the original songs
i made up-I played in a finger picking style with a thumb-pick.Because of all those years
of finger picking i am still pretty good at it today.I only learned to play with flat pick
many years after these early day's when i first realy learned to play guitar.I also practiced
scales endlessly.I got really good at it and i was fast.One reason i'm telling you all this is
because many of the musicians that formed Punk rock bands only had very rudimentry
skills as musicians.This was not the case however with me.By the time the first incarnations
of what would eventually become "Pete Holly and the Look's" started forming i had all-
ready been playing around Boise as solo acoustic act for several years.
There were many reasons i didn't stay a strictly solo act and started forming
bands.One of the main reasons was it was around this time that the singer-songwriter
movement lost it's popularity.Record labels were no longer signing acoustic solo acts.
Believe it or not-one of the last successful singer-songwriters to be signed to a major
label was John Couger Mellencamp known then as "Johnny Cougar".Two of the other
last one's were Willie Nile and Steve Forbet.Both came out of the starting gate strong
with Steve Forbert even scoring a big hit with "Romeo's Tune".But Forbert failed
to ever score another hit and as talented as Willie Nile was-he didn't breakthrough
to the mainstream. and both of them eventually faded into obscurity.I loved Steve
Forberts first album "Alive on Arrival".I used to listin to it alot even after we formed
"The Look's" but the writing on the wall was easy to see.The Heyday of singer-songeriters
was over-history.So as much as i had wanted to be a singer-songwriter and didn't
really want to start a band-because the singer-songwriter movement had come to an end-
I ended up starting "The Look's".
That's one of the reason's why "The Look's" had a sound that was hard to pin down.
The band was really just a vehicle for "souped-up" versions of the songs i'd written on
acoustic guitar.All of them.For the most part-I have never written even one song on
an electric guitar;the instrumental "Pete's Naima" is the lone exception.
And that's the way it's allway's been for me.Behind all the labels people have put
on me and on "Pete Holly and the Look's".The catagory that the greatist majority of
my songs and the song's we played in "The Look's" really belongs in is singer-songwriter.

#1."Battle of the Garges"-original "12" inch vinyl release in 1981.
If you look really hard you can see etched into the vinyl after the
last song-"Sky Saxon Live's".Sky Saxon was the lead Singer and
songwriter of the legendary Garage Band "The Seed's".The
Seeds best known song,"Pushin' to Hard" is one of several classic garage band songs that appear as cover versions on the album.

#2."Paperback Writer"-The Beatles-If you listen carefully to
the background vocals by John and George they aren't singing
about a "Paperback Writer".Instead they intone the french
nursery rhyme "phar-ah-jauqe-ah".Some how it work's !

#3."Day Tripper"-The Beatle's-More Beatles mischief as the line
that was originally written as "She's a Big Teaser" become's
"She's a Prick Teaser".Boy's will be Boy's.

#4.The song that won Johnny Rotten the lead-singer spot in the
Sex Pistols was a spontanous and spitited version of Alice Cooper's
"I'm Eighteen".

#5.The Rolling Stones and The Beatles got along famously.All of the
Good Boy/Bad Boy rivalry was complete fiction made up by The
Stones Manager-Andrew Long Oldham.

But wait a minute-Andrew Long Oldham also was the most vocal
oponent of the English Music Trade Papers trashing of The Beach Boy's
Landmark album "Pet Sounds".He went so far as to take out a very
expensive full page ad in "The London Time's"-proclaiming "Pet Sounds"
as the Greatist record of all time and that all the critics were idiots
who didn't know a true work of genuis when they heard it.Paul McCart-
ney also expressed his fondness and amazment at the extremly
creative use of sound on the Record.

History Never Repeats

Without actually coming out and saying it-writers who are not proffesional
historians,archeologists,geologists,astronomers or astro-physisists make state-
ments,mostly on television,but also in books,and of coarse on the internet that
try to convince a person of average intelligence that,in essence,Homo Sapien
Sapiens{the human species}don't and never have had the abilility to come up
idea's,using only the power of thier human brains,complex and powerful
enough to 1.Build the Great Pyramid{s} 2.Move incredibly large and heavy
Stones {stonehenge,Numerous sites in south america,the easter island statues etc.}
3.Have a great understanding of the Star's and thier movements and the ability
to use that information to create exremely accurate calenders and and other
extremly accurate time accounting systems.Yet,if you keep up with all the
latest archeological and scientific discoveries not only have scientists been
able to figure at least one way that out ancient ancestor's could have achieved
all these great accomplishments but in many case's they have figured out two,
or three differant way's which the ancients could have divised techniques,
systems and even built{thou crude by today's standards}machines that could
perform any task that would have needed to create all of the physical wonders
of the ancient world that either we have knowledge of or that still exist today. Since electric light wasn't made available to the mass public until the 20th
century it is not surprising at all that are ancient ancestors had such a vast
and amazing understanding of the star's movements since at night the star's
in ancient day's would have appeared to our ancestors as an amazing world
of a signifacnce.Of coarse it makes perfect sense that they studied it relentlessly
until they had it figured out right down to literally a fraction of a second.
Part of the reason we misunderstand the amount of intelligence
ancient civilizations possessed is because the secrets to unlocking it were destroyed.
The Library at Alexandria in Egypt being burned to the ground was without
a doubt the single largest loss of ancient knowledge that has ever occured.
The Burning of the Aztecs Codex by the Spanish Conquistadors coming in at
a close second.
But Some wiser minds saw these disasters coming and were able to remove
or otherwise hide and so preserve some of the documents of our ancient ancestor's
Amazing technical knowledge,Art,Understanding of the cosmos,the human mind,
advanced mathmatics and medicine{understanding of the Human Body}.
It is because of the forsight of a few individuals that we know just how advanced
in intelligence and technology our ancestors were.Armed with this incredible
amount of knowledge that we now know,even the earliest civilizations possessed.
It is not difficult to understand how The Wonders of the Ancient World were
designed and created by brains identical to our own.

The Music Business is The Music Business

If you think now is the only time there has been alot bad music in the market
place try this.Find some old copies of Music Trade Magazines from any old time period
and you'll see that the ratio of bad music to good or great music is about the same.
The ratio-or "Crap Factor" as some refer to it as,is allway's about the same.The
amount of corruption in the music business stay's pretty steady too.The bottom
line is-there are very few checks and balance's in the music business.The line in
"There's no Business Like Show Business" about "anything the public will allow" didn't spring out of the imagination of the lyric writer-it sprang out of "The reality
of the Nature of Show Business".The nature of show business is to make,write,perform
or otherwise produce whatever you can get the public to buy.That was true in 1925,
and it's still true today;85 years later.George and Ira Gershwin wrote and produced
100's of Musicals for Broadway in the 1920's amd 30's.How many do you think were
Hit's.Only a fraction.Most of thier shows bombed-but occasionally one caught the
public's fancy and that's when the Money Rolled in for the Gershwin's."Oh Kay" was
one of "The Gershwins" biggest Bomb's.It played for maybe a week before being
tossed into the trash heap of failed Broadway Show's-which is quite large as one might
imagine.Yet,there is one song from "Oh Kay" that had a longer life.If you saw the film
"Mr. Hollands Opus" you may have heard it.It's a rather picturesqe and fanciful number
known as "Someone to Watch Over Me".So the musical wasn't a complete failure.One
song from it lives on in George and Ira Gershwins song catolog and it's a real Doosie.
So one learns that in show business-as in life itself-each failure-is also a pathway to
success in the future.And that's today's show business lesson of day.Until next time-

Orchard Hire's New CEO Rather Than Fixing Thier Illegal Business Model

In a move that really comes as no surprize-givin" the Orchards Sleazy record
of engaging in illegal music business practices-rather than ceasing to engage in criminal
activity they instead have just put a new person in charge of them.New Orchard CEO
Brad Navin,now finds himself in the precarious position of being in charge of a
Company that everyone in the Music Industry knows is engaged in illegal business
activities-mainly looting thier artists royalty accounts and by doing so commiting
a Felony federal crime.This move will only add to The Orchards Massive ammount of
troubles and sink them further down the hole of non-viablity.The Orchard is now
basically a Ponzie scheme.Only instead of selling junk bonds and stocks with no value-
they are selling contracts which they have no intention of living up to which will
leave thier artists pennyless but the Orchard's old School Crooks Rolling in the Money.
Will someone put an end to this looting.It's possible.The New York District Attorney
has been contacted about the Orchards unsavory business practices and it highly
likely that criminal charge's will be forth coming.Especially at risk is theFormer head
of The Orchard-Richard Gottner-a man who previously-before these indiscretions had
come to light-been considered one of the more legitamite persons in the Music Business.
Now it appears that,just like Bernie Madoff,Gottener has been robbing his artists blind
in Broad daylight.If he'll do that in the daytime just imagine what he get''s up to at night.
The Orchard appears to be trying to put on a front of legitamacy until they
can unload this ticking time bomb on some poor unwitting soul.Buyers beware.

rush to distance themselves as fast as they can from the condemed Orchard Corperation.Spokemen and Women for a number of Large Music Entitities,who
went on record in exchage for Anonimity claimed to have "No Idea That the Orchard was
invovled in such dreadful,illegal music Buisness activities".For the past four years The Orchard
has gutted Disabled songwriters royaties for thier own profit because they seem certain that
Disabled American's are vulnrable and will be unable to take on a Multi-National Corperation
in order to force them to pay what they owe in song royalties to the Disabled American Songwriters.One former Orchard employe who also spoke on the condition of anonymity said "What's even more incredible is that the Orchard Used an Ancient outdated and unappicable Royalty Scam know as "Returns"."When i saw they were using 'Return's' to steal the money from thier clients i was shocked-because Downloads can't be returned and i knew then i had to get out-because they were sure to get caught""I have a wife and family" the former employee continued and "I will not risk thier futures by being party to this kind of old school songwriter Royalty Scam ! "Especially when i discovered they were specificaly targeting disabled American sonwriters" "It's such a disgusting tactic to resort too" "I knew they'ed get caught and i didn't want to be there when they were".The former employee left The Orchard Three Years Ago.
Publishing companies,independant record labels and big time music Artists are leaving
the Orchard's sinking ship in huge number's in a rush hoping to avoid any association with such incrediblely illegal and scandalous Music Business Pratice's.The Orchard was contacted for comment-but were unable to be reached."The Orchards been trying to cover this up for years-while at the same time continuing to indulge in this horribly ugly and illegal Scam".The music Business is reeling from these revelations.It seems the Orchard followed the Bernie Madoff mindset-Lie and then lie about those lies and just keep on lying untill there's nothing left that can help or save you or your Buisness.It allmost make's payola look like childs play.
Disabled American's are protected from being victumized by the Law-passed in 1992-
passed especially to protect these vulnrable disabled Americans.The Orchard now faces a number of Felony charges because of these laws and also because what they were doing would be totally illegal no matter who the party's were that were involved.There is no chance for the

The ORCHARD pulled off the hiest by using one of thier lackeys "Nick Gorden" a man commonly referded to in the music Industry as "a music business weasel" as once source put it.What surprises the Music Industry is the blatent and obvious way-and "also very outdated"-way that "The Orchard" used to steal the royayties of the handicapped songwriter.They used an very old Record Label scam which puts the stolen money under the catagory of "Returns" robbing the songwriters of thier royaties ."No-one has used this oudated scam in decades" spoke another inside source from the music Indusry."And there's a very good reason why"-"You can't return downloads !".Every one we talked to in the

ANYONE FOR TEA ? -THE HIDDEN BRAIN OF TEA PARTY MEMBERS

Tea Party members seem to be People who have evolved away from old
associations of words like Goverment ,Republican ,and Democrat and replaced all of
the Good associations these words may have had in the past with completely negative
associations. To a certain extent,we have all done this in differing degree's.Negative
associations with these words are now part of all our hidden brain referance points.
The differance is that the Tea Party'ers have gone all the way and switched thier hidden brain referance circuits to these words to all negative associations.It's partly
the result of the frustration caused by conflicticing messages sent by the Overgrown
Media that Bombards us daily-overloading our sense's to the point where nothing
seems right or true anymore and so the aforementioned words{You can add Tax's}
have become words with only negative assciations for Tea Party members.Because
these word associations are located in our hidden brains-Tea Party members are not
aware of the chage in word associations that have occured in thier Brains.Thier actions,
however reveal that they most certainly have.While the rest of us cling as tightly as
possible to positive associations of the words Goverment,Republican,and Democrat-i.e.
Goverment is Good-Democracy is what makes America the Greatist Nation on Earth.
We have free speech and certain inaliable Rights and-
"You know that can't be Bad
"Yeah,Yeah,Yeah,
America we love you,
and you know you shoud be Glad-Ohoooo ! ! !"

So for the "TPM" Goverment is now only associated with the negative.
They have made the final leap.Not even being consciously aware that
the swich has happened.That this change came from thier hidden brains
does not nessassarily mean that it is bad or wrong.It just means that the
change took place in thier hidden brains without thier being aware of it.
These word association changes happen at a pretty steady clip in our
modern information rich world,but most of these changes are more personal and private.In the "TPM" we find many people changing
thier word associations at once and taking that change to the street.They
may not have a plan to replace the old system-but they know for sure that
the current system is broken and infinatly corrupt.They are sure of that.
Sure enough to take it to the streets and march in protest wielding sign's
that speak of their negative assessment of our current goverment,it's
policy's and it elected leaders.
This word association change has happened en-masse in a fairly large group of Americans caused mainly by pure frustration and disgust with what they
percieve to be the end of the American Dream.And who can Blame Them ?
Day in and Day out Americans are presented with so many outragous
opinions from the Global Mass Media that it's a wonder that a section of
the American Public hasn't broken out much sooner.No ! They say-I don't
believe you.I don't buy your quick fix for the rich or the poor or is there any
fix for the middle class ? I don't believe your telling the truth about yours.
This Man-This Woman is lying to me-i can feel it in my bone's
and deep down to the depths of my patriotic American Soul.We've been
sold out to corperate interests-both political parties-niether are viable for
me any more-i have no trust in them-thier actions have revealed thier
hypocritcal philosophy-and it just doen't add up-were being cheated-sold
a bill of goods worth no value whatsoever.In short we have been totally and completly
ripped off by our own Goverment and it's elected leaders.Tax's-please-forget
about it-they are just a polite word the goverment use's to rob good law abidding American citizens of thier hard earned Cash ! .Our country has been permiated from coast to
coast with coruption at every level of society.While the politicians make sure
they make the rich richer-insuring a generous campaign contrabution-the rest
of America is getting screwed,blued and tatoo'ed.

That is my decipherment of The Tea Party Movement-it cause's-motivations
and the actual hidden Brain Mechanism that allowed it to take place.It's fairly
rare that word associations happen so suddenly en-masse but in reality we've
seen sign's of something like this coming for along time and let's face it-there's
a little bit of Tea Party word association in all of us.Were just not aware of it

The New Pete Holly CD "Sun Valley"-notes from Pete Holly

Pete Holly-"Sun Valley"

My new CD is an very interesting collection of songs,the majority of which
were recorded when i first got sober.What's interesting is that even though as
a person i was quite differant sober than when i was drinking, as a songwriter i still sounded
very close to the same.You can hear this in the song "You Walked Away".The
1st original recording which appeared on my 4th Cd "The Morrison Center Session"
was one of the only really good recordings i was able to complete in those last
years of my drinking.And yet the Version i recorded after i got sober on this Cd
is almost completely identical-only the way it was arranged is differant.But the
Vocal and the acoustic guitar sound very much the same-nearly identical in fact.
That suprised me-and it still does.There's one other song on this new Cd that has
come out before-"Hard to Love a Man{Who Loves His Guitar".The Version i
released before on the "Riverside Drive" CD was recorded in Austin,TX,at a
session where i recorded 13 songs in one hour in one of the first digital studio's
anywhere.This is the original version here on this CD-one of the many song's
i was to write up in Sun Valley-Where lived for quite a spell.Now what's inter-
resting is that this 1st version is noticably differant from the one i recorded over
a year later in Austin.It's rythm' is much more "Fluid".Later on as i played the
song more-i made it more choppy-more like broken-up power chords on an
acoustic guitar-and can't tell you why i did that-because it just happened-on it's
own.But there's something good about both way's of playing it-they're differant-
But both are very good solid versions of the song.
So there's a couple of alternate versions but there are six very interesting
totally new Pete Holly song's to be heard here for the first time ever."The
Shadow of Your Smile" isn't the old song,but a totally new Pete Holly song
That's probably one of my best songs-ever-it's just been hiding out for a while.
"Jane Day" is one of my favorites-because it's about this very cool Girl who
used to come and do therapy of a very unique sort.It was like voice therapy
where she would use her voice,while relaxing music was playing,and she would
guide us all on a little trip to a very beautiful, serene place.It was really quite
amazing.So i became quite found of Jane and i wrote this really differant kind of
song to express that.It's just got a differant style to it-it doesn't sound so much
like the rest of my songs-it's pretty differant-kind of english-brit-style-and again
i don't know why it came out in this song that way-it just did ! But it's very cool and
i've allways liked the song alot-because it's differant and because of "Jane".
"Ya Stone Me" is a straight forward R&B Song."Everybody Call Now" is a
gospel song and "Buyin' this Bar" has it's origins in my drinking day's but to
be honest i'm not sure when i wrote it-i just knew i liked it-and i wanted to
take a crack at recording it and i liked the way it came out here.
Now the Mini-Rock Opera.What on earth could have gottin' into me that
got me to write the 10 min. "Computer Commuter" with a whole sequece of
of song's that added up to one 10 min whole.I can't tell you exactly-but i can tell
you it all came to me at once.I mean the whole thing-and it's the only thing of
this nature i ever wrote.Remembering one song is hard enough-but 4 or 5
that just flow together-it's really a rarity for me.I do remember that i worked
all day and half the night making sure i got it all down while it was in my head.
And then i think i overdubed the electric guitar part the next day.I remember
thinking at the time how unusual this was-but it was such a big force of energy
that came through me-i just felt relief after i had nailed it.Here it seemed like
good place to release it-as the closing track of this album.And that's it.That's
A little bit of info about all the song's on "Sun Valley".

Amazon.com Wrong-"The Wizard of Garage" CD Is Still In Print

A NOTE FROM PETE HOLLY ABOUT WHO MANUFACTURE'S MY CD'S
There seems to be abit of confusion about who manufacture's my CD's.
My record label-Look's Music International-manufactures all of the
Pete Holly solo CD's-Including "The Wizard Of Garage","Riverside Drive","Pete Holly III",
"The Morrison Center Session","The Balled of Pete Holly" and my new CD "Sun Valley".
We also manufacture the CD-Pete Holly and the Look's-"Live at Desmond and Mollies".
The confusion about who the manufacturer of all these Cd's is started because
"The Orchard",who used to be one of my Distributers,falsely represented themselve's
as "The Manufacturer" of my first three Cd's-"The Wizard of Garage"-"Riverside Drive"
and "Pete Holly III".Exactly as to why they did this.I do not know.I do know however,
that this is not the only false information "The Orchard" has givin' out and that is why
i ended my relationship with "The Orchard" and they no longer have any rights to
disribute either my Cd's or any of my music downloads.About 4 years ago,after i keep
noticing that the money that collected from sales of my music by "The Orchard" of both
Physical CD's and MP3 Downloads-kept magically dis-appearing-{The Orchard gives
access to an accounting page to all the artists whose music they distribute so that they
can see all the activity and how much money has collected that is owed to each Artist}
I had complained to them quite a few times when my share of the profit of all sales-
seemed to disappear or magically get lowered to just below the level where legally
"The Orchard" would have to send me a check and pay me.Also,on more than a few
occasions,even though the amount of money owed to me was above the "Must Pay"
level.The Orchard still didn't issue a check-as they were legally bound to do.I kept
having to call them and e-mail them over and over again before they would finally
cave in-do the right thing-and send me a check.As you can imagine;this was a very
frustrating and time consuming ordeal that i didn't like at all and i let "The Orchard"
know this on several occassions-but the situation never improved-it allways took
at least 5 to 10 months and sometimes even a year or more to get them to issue
a check.But eventually,even though it was an incredible,illegal and unnessary hassle-I
would finally suceed in getting my money.The Amounts were not that large but that
had been slowly changing as one of my song's-"Are You Gonna Be My Girl" sales took
off and money started pouring in.Eventually i found out why from an old fan of "Pete Holly
and the Look's" who sent me a post card from New York.He wanted to make sure that
i was aware that "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" had been aired in it's entirity on a nationally syndicated TV show-"Full Frontal Fashion " which was on The Womens Channel.We don't
get the Womens Channel here in Boise so i was not aware of this use,but it expalined the
sudden increase in sale's-especially of the MP3 of "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" but also of
"The Wizard of Garage" CD-both of which were still being distributed by "The Orchard"
at the time.The song and the album rose up into the top ten on Rhapsody's Lo-Fi Charts
and "The Orchard" owed me about $300.00 and the numbers were going up faster and faster
everyday.When i tried to get "The Orchard" to pay me this larger paycheck is when i first
talked to "Nick Gorden" who had been appointed as the new man in charge of artist relations
at "The Orchard".Nick said he was unaware of the Outstanding Balance that was owed to me
by "The Orchard" but asked me to give him a day-and he would check into it.The next morning i logged onto my Orchard accounting page.All three hundred dollars had dis-appeared overnight.I immediatly called Nick and asked him what had happened to my money."Returns" Nick replied "Returns" had eliminated 300.00 dollars overnight ! "Nick" i said "All of
the 300.00 dollars The Orchard owed me had come from MP3 Downloads,You can't return
a Download".Nick Gorden went beserk ! He said he was deleting my account,and was sending
all of the CD's of mine the Orchard had in stock{about 300 or 4000.00 dollars worth} back to me immediatlly and that The Orchard and myself no longer had any Relationship and then he hung up !
Well Nick Gorden deleted my accounting page but that's it.I could no longer see the
activity because Nick had deleted it and made it unavailable to me.But he never deleted
The Orchards encodedments of all the songs on my first three Cd's-51 songs-many were
my best sellers.The Orchard continued to sell both my CD's and my MP3's and though
i tried to stop them-the Orchard stayed in denial-no matter what agency i sent after them-
Nobody seemed to be able to do anything-my music had been stolen and still remains that
way to this day.So take it from one who know's-stay away from The Orchard ! Far,Far Away.
Eventually i got a differant distributer-MAD Distribution-but the disruption that
The Orchard's Lies and Actions caused cost me thousands upon thousands of dollars and what i could fix took years and years of precious time and not to mention the mental pain and auguish.Stay Away From The Orchard-I Repeat-Stay Away From The Orchard.
The false statement that "The Wizard of Garage" is out of print is up on The Amazon page because "The Orchard" missrepresented itself to Amazon.com-they took on the guise
of being "The Manufacturer" and "The Disributer" so that they could keep selling my music
without paying me-and so far they've gotten' a way with it.The statement on the Amazon
Page that "The Wizard of Garage" is out of print really means that the Orchard has sold all
the copies that they were supposed to return to me-but never did.Instead they broke the law-stole all my CD's and sold them and now all the copies they stole from me of "The Wizard of Garage" they have sold illegally,Kept all the money and didn't pay me a red cent.
Stay Away From The Orchard-Let This Be A Lesson-Stay Far Far Away from the Orchard

Punk/New Wave-1976-1982-What it Was All About

The bands that emerged around 1976-1982 and usually are classified as
Punk or New Wave or Both-Like my Band-"Pete Holly and the Look's" all shared a
simular background in that when the music that influened most-The Beatle's-The
Beach Boy's-Paul Revere and the Raiders-and The Who etc. first came out we were
all just very young kids-below the age of ten.By the time we were old enough to
start our own Bands-The music that had originally inspired us was gone.It wasn't
played on the radio or anywhere else.Most of the time the only way we could still
hear it was by playing the records we had bought when we were just young kids.
I still had many of the first records i had bought{or got my Mom to buy for me,
she was pretty understanding about that}and so did other people my age."Meet
the Beatle's","Please Please Me","The Beach Boy's Today","Summer Day's{And
Summer Nights}"-Plus we started to collect records we wished we had like "The
Kinks Greatest Hit's{a Must Have},and "The Who Sell Out".Obscure singles like
"Sorrow" by the Merseybeats were also very inspirational.In "The Look's" it
was undoubtably the one cover song we played the most times-especially in the
early day's.
For some reason,after the singer-songwriters,,Progressive Rock,and Disco
All of us Musicians starting our first Bands-were drawn back to the first Rock 'n Roll
we had heard and fell in love with.

Record Review

"Emitt Rhodes"-Emitt Rhodes

Sometime in the early 70's pop/rock singer-songwriter ,multi-instrumentalist,
co-producer,Engineer and composer Emitt Rhodes released his debut solo album.
At the time he became a minor sensation because he seemed to sound allmost
exactly like Paul McCartney.Just as McCartney had done on his 1st solo album
sans-Beatles,Emitt played every instrument on the album.Co-produced it and
Engineered it.Rhodes attracted much attention because not only did he sound
like Paul,but he composed his song's in a very simular fashion.
Back then i remember someone telling me that he had recorded the album
at a home-studio he had built.But today i see in the credits that it was recorded
at Sound City in L.A.-The most premier studio in L.A. and a legend itself.This
explains why the album had such great sound quality.The mystery is how did
Rhodes-Thou he had had some success in a band-but otherwise he was completely
unknown to the public and had yet to prove he could he could deliver hit's on his
own-get the money to finance the recording of this album at Sound City,which
at the time was the most expensive studio in L. A.-did the record label think
that the public would buy a McCartney-esk style artist.It's possible.But some
one had to put up the money and in those day's it was allmost allway's the Label.
However it happened Rhodes apparently got free riegn at Sound City
and since he was playing every instrument on the record-it must have cost
fortune !
The record Rhodes made is quite good and listening to it today he sounds
more like "Badfinger"than "McCartney" thou there are still plenty of
McCartnyisms to be found on the record.But it is definatly a first rate record-
there's no doubt about it.Whatever the label shelled out for this record if they
didn't get thier money back in sales they most definatly got it back in the form
of Emitt Rhodes incredible skills as an artist and as a performer who
seemed to be able to do just about anything.A one man band and a top-notch
Engineer.Emitt knew how to work the studio real good-he's one of the best.

Postscript:None of the several records Rhode's made around this time-
all pretty much in the same style-of which he continued to have excellent
skill at composing and at getting great performances down on Tape -sold
very well-but he did and i'm sure still does have a large cult following-
The Records pressed back in the 70's are very valuble today.A pristine copy
of this record could get hundreds and even possibly over a thousand dollars
from certain collectors-because they are extremly rare.Even a slightly
roughed up copy can still command a pretty high price-so if you see one
at a garage sale or a second hand store-buy it-it could be worth a small
fortune.Emitt's work now finally get's the respect and is valued at prices
That reflect the incredible amount of talent that went into making these
incredible records.

Showing a Little Transparency in Show Business

For the last one hundred years or so few artists in Show Business
Have ever explained just exactly how it Works or doesn't work-in some
Situations-but in the last month i've seen at least two Fairly well known
Stars talk in unusually truthful manners about what the bottom line really
is in show business.First i saw an article on the Web about Marshall Crenshaw.
By shear happenstance i happen to know Marshall abit.When i went to New York
City just after 1980-Marshall was the talk of the town.When i read an article
about him in "The New York Rocker" he sounded like someone i would enjoy
seeing in concert.Soon after that i saw he was playing at CBGB's one night-
so i went to visit the famous original home of Punk Rock-just to see Marshall.
He's really a terrific performer and he was riding a hot streak that eventually
landed him a contract with one of the major labels.I ran into him a couple more
time's,once more at the Pepperment Louge where a picture was taken by one of
the The New York Rockers photographers as i was giving Marshall a copy of
my Bomp single.It appeared in a big center spread the magazine put out under
the heading-The Daze of our Nights and it said "Pete Holly lay's one of his new single's
on Marshall Crenshaw while they discuss ways of trying to avoid those
constant comparisons to you know who"{Buddy Holly}.So that was pretty cool.
It was the first big shot in the arm of Publicity i ever got from a Rock Magazine.
I also ran into Marshall a couple of times in Nashville.Once i was just sitting
on the steps of an old house where my apt. was and i suddenly remmebered that
i had doctors appointment.I never have worn a watch and i didn't have a clock in
my apt. either.So i see a guy walking towards my apt. but on the other side of the street.
I could see he was wearing a Black leather Motorcycle Jacket so i thought,well he look's
like a pretty cool guy so i walked across the street to ask him if he had the Time and
he did .Suddenly i realized it was Marshall.We talked music shop for a while and
i remember him telling me that he had seen "The Who" in concert in Detroit where
he was from and that was pretty impressive to me.But the odd's that i would just happen
to ask Marshall for the time seemed pretty amazing to me.It was a cool-but kinda
strange thing to happen-I mean just think of the odd's of that happening-but that's
kinda been the one constant in my life-that the most unlikely event to happen-happens
to me.
So anyway back to web article.Marshall and the interviewer were talking about his
song's and Marshall just come's right out and say's "Someday,Someway" is definatly
not my best song,but it's the one that got the most radio promotion.So it was the biggest
hit.Radio Promotion is allmost never talked about because frankly it's a bit of a racket .
The Italian Mafia used to do all the radio promo work and thay made a fortune doing it-
so people got into the habit of not talking about it-because frankly-they didn't want to
get Wacked for having a big mouth.
Today other entities have moved into radio promo work but there's still a few of
the old italian gangsters around-but they're dying off and other people are taking over.
But the rules are still the same-if you want Radio Play-you've got to pay.So it was
interesting to hear Marshall talking about this part of the record business that nobody
ever talk's about.It's first time i've ever heard an established Rocker with impecable
"Street Cred" say anything about it.It kind of made me proud that i knew him a little.
Then about week ago Robin Wright-Sean Penn's ex-wife was on one of the
late night talk shows promoting an indie film she'd starred in and she just comes out
and say's-"even though it's a fantastic movie that i'm extremly proud of-it didn't do
well at the box office" and it only had a limited re-lease."Why is that" the host asked.
and Wright added there was no television marketing of the movie what so ever !
"I don't understand" the host said."They spend all this money to make a Great Film
and the they do nothing to promote it"."Why would they do that" he added."It just
doesn't make any sense at all".And he was right-it doesn't;but that just the strange
way Show business works.There's no big secrets and nobody seems to be in control-
In other word's-it's a crap shoot.If your lucky your movie or record will get lots
promtion and it will be a huge hit-if you're not lucky well more than likely-no matter
how great your movie or record is-it will get no-where fast.

Why Pete Holly {and the Look's}have no Bio

There is a good reason why there is only one accurate Bio
{GreatSong-France}} of me on the internet even though i started
my website before any other musical artist on the internet.I got
up on the internet first because of a Genuis Marine Biologist
i knew.He told me about the Web in the very first day's of it's
inception.
He was a really big fan of my Band "The Look's".He predicted
that the internet would become a very big source of music for the
public and it turned out his prediction was right on the mark.
He saw this potential way before anyone else did and his enthusiasum
inspired me to start my website 14 years ago.
I was the first music artist to use my name as the name of my
Domain website-peteholly.com .Something that other music artists
didn't start doing until much later.
But the reason there are no real bio's of me on the internet is
because the story of my career is very differant from most music
artists.
First of all "The Look's" never moved to a Bigger City and/or
Music Town.I was able to talk Greg Shaw at Bomp Records into
financing a studio session in L.A. over the phone simply by the
strength of our demo tape and by my own gift of salesmanship.
{My father was well known in the Car Business as being the greatist
Car salesman of all time}
To get a chance to record a single in this way was unpresidented
in the entire History of Pop/Rock Music.No other band from any time
period was ever able to pull off what i accomplished.Getting a record
deal without ever leaving my Hometown of Boise,Idaho.One of the
other reasons we were able to accomplish this impossible task was
the perfect timing of the first inexpensive home recording decks
with really great sound quality becoming available to the public in
1978.By 1979 i had figured out how to get the best sounding recordings
from this new advance in recording equipment.
In many way's our band's sound didn't fit into any of the styles
that Bomp released in those day's.Greg Shaw saw us as futurists whose
sound was a harbinger of things to come.We weren't a "Garage Band",
we didn't play "Power Pop" or "Psychadelic" music.We really were just
a straight,street smart,original rock band.When we first meet our
producer,"Scott Goddard",in a brand new state of the art 48 track
recording studio-the pairing of the former "Surf Punk" Scott and
"Pete Holly and the Look's" looked promising.We started to play a
bunch of songs i had written and which were being recorded and
both Scott and our engineer,the famous Thom Wilson{the best ears in
the business} were very confidant in the potential of my songs.
We were getting a deal from the studio by using "Spec Time" which
meant anytime the studio wasn't being used by someone else.So it
could be day's or even a week before we could get back in the studio.
Finally we got the call from Greg Shaw that some more time was
available{We were staying with our drummers family in La Puenta
in East L.A.}
When we finally all got back in the studio,our second session,we
were meet by a totally differant "Scott Goddard".He was completly
wasted on pot,cocaine,alcohol and god only knows what else.He was
extremly beligerant and arguementative.I grew up in an alcoholic
family so i knew it was just the booze and the drugs talking but when
he started harrassing Mitch and Lenny,calling them unspeakable
names and making racist remarks to Lenny-I just couldn't stand
it.I got him cooled out a little by using some of my Barrage of tactics
that i had developed to deal with my dad when he went on a bender
and it worked well enough that at least i got him to stop badgering
Mitch and Lenny.
Needless to say we didn't get much work done that day but at the
end of it we all listened to the playback of what we had recorded so far.
After hearing the playback i realized that the band on the tape didn't
sound anything like "Pete Holly and the Look's".It sounded like some
really slick power pop band from L.A. and i was not pleased.
Thinking about this later i thought of one possible reason why
Scott might think we had a sound similar to all the power pop bands
in L.A..He must not have ever heard our Demo Tape ! I called Greg
and he confirmed my suspician-he's never givin our demo tape to Scott
so he could get an idea of what kind of band we were.I told Greg that
what we had recorded so far sounded like shit and that he had to get that
Demo tape to Scott as soon as possible-plus i asked for one more favor-
to ask Scott to be Straight at the next Session.Greg agreed.
Now we finally get to our third and last session{I told greg that we
had to leave soon-we'd allready spent over 3 week's at lenny's family's
home and i could feel the tension mounting from the cramped living
conditions,i had started to hear arguements and i knew we had to
leave soon}of in the studio-and a straight and humbled Scott Goddard
was there apoligizeing for his behavior at the last session,saying that he
had listened to the tape and now he knew why we were unhappy with
the sound he'd applied to my music.It was early morning and our last
chance to fix everything that was wrong with the recording.
First we re-recorded every electric guitar part including all the lead
Guitar work.Only this time i had every knob on my 250 watt amp turned
up all the way nearly blasting the two 15 inch speakers in my Randall Speaker
cabinet to smithereens .It was the most beautiful,ground shaking{literally}
and powerful sound i'd ever heard in my life and i loved it."Today",Scott had
annouced earlier-speaking directly to me-"You have to be Superman".
We did background vocals,tons of them,Handclaps{me and scott},
Over dubbed an acoustic 12-string guitar part on "What Did I Say"
and both myself and scott did the vocal harmonies on it as well on it.
Finally everything was falling into place and just in the nick of time.
So i didn't get to make the record i wanted to make-but the record
that we did make was totally unique and had pleasures of it's own.Which
now i can appreciatte much better than i could back then.

note:So that's why you don't see Bio's of me or the Look's.Because
we never fitted into any one catagory-and that has continued to
be the case when i finally got around to recording my solo CD's.
There are no Bio's because the story of my music career both
with "The Look's" and as a solo artist doesn't fit neatly into
any catagory and also because of the miracleous way in which
i got my start in show business.You just can't explain a miracle
in a Bio.

CODA:In memory of Scott Goddard

About 7 years ago i got an e-mail from Scott telling me
how glad it made him to hear that i was doing so good ! It was abit of a shock because
i hadn't heard from him since we made the "Pete Holly and the Look's " single in 1980.
I hadn't seen or heard anything about him in the music business either-and that did
seem strange to me because Scott-despite his struggle's with drugs and alcohol {I
had my share latter too}was a very talented musician,vocalist,and Producer.
He wrote to apoligize for his being so fucked up that 2nd session and being such a jerk
to me and the Look's.He also mentioned that he'd allway's felt really bad about the
the mix he made of the record and that it really had bothered him all these years.
{After we returned to Boise Scott made a horrible mix of the single that Greg had
sent to me-he'd speeded everything up to chipmonk level and and the guitars and
vocals that we'd worked so hard to get right on that last session were buried in the
the mix-it was a mess-that took the combined force's of Greg Shaw,Thom Wilson
and me-giving them instructions over the phone to fix everything and get back to
the way it sounded on that last play back we heard after the 3rd and final Session.
I have to say here that it was only because Greg Shaw had complete confidence in
my ability to know just how my music should sound-that the single finally came
out sounding as great as it did-without Greg's confidence in my judgement we
never would have been able to get through all the the problem's we had too and
and have the single finally be released with such a Great Sound and Mix.
I wrote back to Scott and told him that it all happened along time ago and
he should just let it go.The e-mail he sent back was estatic-i could tell he felt a
great sense of relief from what i had wrote.I had no idea until i saw an article
on the internet allmost two years later that just a few weeks after he's written

his final amends knowing he didn't have much time left to do so.Farewell-

The Enigma of Jonathan Richmond

Rock Musics Most Unique Artists

Of all the unique artists in the field of Rock Music,Jonathan Richmand is per-
haps the most unique of all.I remember seeing a quote a few years ago that came
from John Lydon AKA Johnny Rotten where he said "I think Jonathan Richmond
is great-that is if he is kidding-he is kidding isn't he?".That's the enigma of Jonathan
Richmond.That he is both kidding and totally serious at the same time.If you don't
understand that about him then you probably won't get his music{What it's About}.
How did the Bostonian Rocker come to be an artist who is both serious and kidding.
Well you have to go back to his bands first album where they were billed only as
"The Modern Lovers".They were an underground band who very quickly attracted
a pretty large cult following.The album they recorded sounded more like Lou
Reed's band "The Velvet Underground" than anything else and back in those
day's very few people knew who "The Velvet Undergroud" was.Even with
Andy Warhol as thier manager and the designer of thier first album cover
"The Velvet Underground",from a commercial point of view, failed miserably.
But Jonathon Richmond obviously saw something and heard something that
really inspired him and so "The Modern Lovers" were formed and recorded
one album which wasn't commercially successful-But a large cult following
began to form that knew just what Richmond and his band were going for.
A band that played very well written songs and that recorded them in a very
spontanious way.That's was what was most important to Jonathan-Great
Songs and spontanaity.I don't know what happened to the other Modern
Lovers but one of the songs on the album ,"Roadrunner" became especially popular with all the leading hipsters of that time,many of whom were music critics,
Radio station Dj's and people in other area's of the Music Business.So "The
Modern Lovers" for a while at least were the underground or alternative
Band of the moment.
Success however,didn't seem to be Jonathans main goal.He broke up the
band and started releasing Albums with other musicians that were billed as
"Jonathan Richmond and the Modern Lovers".The albums sounded very differant
than the kind of music the original Modern Lovers had played and recorded.
Richmand basically recorded a bare bones line up of new modern lovers live.
Sometime's he would record in the bathroom of Beserkley Records,the bands
label and his new material had a very comical and satirical bent.Some of the
songs Sounded like they were recorded for young children-in that that they
were stripped down to just acoustic guitar,Stand up Bass and very minamalistic
Drumming and funny lyrics like "Abombable Snowman in the Market" and
"Dodge Vegamatic" where Jonathan chimes in that even though the car is a
piece of junk he exclaims "Hey,I really like this car alot".There's also a
very funny spoken part where Jonathan twists the words around in a
pretty amazing way-essentially chastising his band for not being able to see
the beauty,simplicity and great value of the car not for it's being a
reliable car but simply because he believes the cars beauty,at least in
his eye's,Makes the car something of Great Value.It's a hilarious song,
But Richmond is also making serious statement that we only value things that
can help us-and anything that doesn't is not of any worth to us.It's a
sly commentary about our selfish modern values that Richmond sneaks
into what other wise seems to just a funny song.
Writing songs like this and ocassionally sliping something more serious,
beautiful and touching in the mix like "The Lonely Financial Zone"
became the template for all the records he recorded for the rest of his
Career.He developed a large cult audience and played innumerable concerts.
His fans,it seemed,couldn't get enough of him.He even appeared in the Ben
Stiller comedy film "There's Something About Mary" and David Bowie recorded
his very intersting song "Pablo Piccaso".So allthough Richmond is at times
richly funny he alway's seems to slip in a very serious philosophical thought
about the strange values of our modern world which we cling to-and if you
are not paying close attention you will miss all of them and they are the
best part of his artistry.

Settle Down-It's Only a Movie !

Dear Fellow Movie Fans

I wanted to let you all know that i have deleted the poem i had posted on my blog
in which i suggested-in jest of coarse-that Tim Burton be drawn and Quartered
for Butchering Lewis Carrol's Great Artistry.While the poem was merely satire
i recently noticed that there are over 1000 "Tim Burton Sucks" website's and
probably alot more.But just on google alone 1000 hate site's is alot.There are a
few that are legitimate writers reviews but the majority are just completly insane
hate rants that sound like they are coming from some very imbalanced minds.
While everyone has the right to thier opinion when things get this wierd i want
no part of it.So that's why i took the satirical poem about alice and tim burton down.
This whole thing is just getting way out of hand and i do not want to contribute to it.
Hopefully this whole thing will die down as the movie's business slowly ebb's as
it inevitably will-but for now-it's just a little to crazy out there and i don't want to
contribute to that.So everyone just be like "The Fonze" remember "He's Cool".
I'm just one artist who writes a a couple of blogs but" i'm tryin' real hard to be the
Shepard ".

The Lost Pioneers of Rock 'n Roll

#4-"Boogie Woogie"-Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra

This song,a staple of Dorsey's band and also of many other travling Bands during
the second World War and after is for all intents and purpose's nearly identical to most
Rock 'n Roll song's that came along later in the 50's{excepting it's an instrumental}.It's
based on the 12 bar blues musical proggression which originated from Black Blue's Piano
Player's like "Pinetop Perkins" before it morphed into rock 'n roll.Even Chuck Berry who,
without a doubt,is the person most responsible for the invention of rock 'n roll,played his
great rock 'n roll song's in chord arrangements that were suited much better for piano than
for Guitar.In the 1960's i used to buy songbook's with Chuck Berry song's that had chord
charts.All his songs were in key's that even an expert jazz guitarist would have a hard time
figuring out.F-sharp was one of the key's most often used by Berry.F-sharp is a very easy
key to play Chuck Berry's song's on piano;but on the guitar it's a very difficult and ackward
key to play in.This tends to back-up Kieth Richard's Theory that much of the musical parts of
Berry's song's came from his piano player-The Great Johnny Johnson.Isn't that just like life
that a man who had so much to do with the invention of Rock 'n Roll is nearly completly unknown by the Public.

In order to achieve that goal he assembled a great band including Richard's himself on Guitar
and they performed live at a really nice Theatre in St. Louis which during the film Berry reveals
that he couldn't go into-as a child-because he was black.Later after the concert Richard's is being
interviewed when he make's the comment about the strange piano key's that Berry used and his
theory that that came from Chuck's piano player-Johnny Johnson being invoved with the writing
of the music.The Film is called "Hail Hail Rock 'n Roll" and is one of the the greatist rock and 'n roll concert films ever made.A must see for anyone who love's Rock 'n Roll Music.

I am a thirty-eight year old,protestant,southern, housewife and mother of
three children.I have gone to church my whole life,until recently,but somehow,they keep
pushing Jesus away.So i took my kids out of the church and i left too.We have to find out about Jesus some other way.
I've learned something.Jesus is white,Negro,yellow,red,Jew.I wish i didn't know that.I live in the wrong place,at the wrong time,to know it.Pray for me.It's to big,I'm scared and lonely.I can't do anything but teach this to my kids and try to have the gut's to say and live it as opportunity comes.All of the children can help.It just has to be a better place in the next generation.Can we learn to see persons,and can our hearts be taught to love.

The story of this polish man from an upper middle class family-who owned a
significant ammount of land which was worked on by serfs.His father,unlike many of the
larger land holders of the day in poland, treated his serfs with respect and dignity. "Thaddeus
Kosciuszko and the Age of Revolution",the subtitle of the book,gives some indication of the
gigantic role the polish Thaddeus played in The American Revolution and latter in The Polish
and French Revelotion.Trained at elite school in Paris in the Art of Military Stratagy and as
an engineer of Military Fortifications and ramparts-he ended up being America's Chief
Military Engineer during all 8 years of The American Revolution.He was a very close
friend both to Washington and to Adams and he designed and built the first fortifications
at West Point on the Hudson River.He spent many years building West Point and then
he served as the southern army's army's chief military engineer and statagist's playing
a decisive role in the Southern Army's defeat of The British Forces.This man is truelly
a forgotten hero of enormous talent and Military Genuis who played an vital role
In America's victory over the British Force's during The American Revolution.
This book is a must read-for it shines a great deal of light not only on the life Thaddeus
Kosciuszko but also contains a very detailed account of The American Revolution;much of
which appears here for the first time.A fasinating read.

The Sounds of the Studio

In the old day's of Music Recording every studio had it's own unique
sound markings-much of the unique sound of an individual studio came from
the room where the musicians played and it's unique sound qualitys.Allmost all
of these rooms were constructed with wood because wood seemed to produce a
very warm sound that engineers and producers of the day found to thier liking.
If you've never seen or been in one of these old recording rooms i'd recomend
any budding or aspiring musical proffessional to expierience at least one of these
rooms.There's one in Nashville that i recorded at called studio 19.At one time in
the 1950's and 1960's it was one of the busiest studio's in Nashville who's list
of users is like a who's who of Rock 'n Roll and country music.The room is huge
and the acoustics of it have to be heard to be believed !
The studio in Muscle Shoals Alabama where many of the Stax/Volt records
were recorded had an incredibly huge bass response.You can hear this bass
sound on the records of Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett.The Muscle Shoals
house band also had alot to do with the unique and amazing sound that many
artists got on thier records .The Motown House studio also had it's unique sound
markings and not only did they have thier own house band,but they also had
thier own staff song writer's-Holland-Dozier-Holland who wrote most of The
Supremes hit songs and Smokey Robinson who not only wrote a tremedous
amount of the song's recorded by Motowns artists{including his own with the
Miracles}but he also produced a huge percentage of Motowns long list of top-
ten records.Abbey Road in London,where The Beatles recorded,also had it own
unique sound qualitys.When George Martin first got E.M.I. to sign "The Beatles"
to thier affilate label Parlaphone which Martin was the head of,as well as being the label's primary Producer{E.M.I. proper had allready turned down
"The Beatle's}they still were basically recording live on two tracks but sometimes
they would use another recorder to record background vocals and to double
John Lennon's vocals{John was very insecure about his vocals}.Paul,on the other hand,was full of vocal confidence,and rightly so,so he didn't double his vocals.Wheither
Lennon's insecuretry was justified or not is an open question-but it did give the songs he sang
lead vocals on a very unique sound-simliar to "The Everly Brothers" and "Buddy Holly" who
was the very first recording artist ever to double his vocals.The Beatles were big fans of both
of these artists.
When 4,8,12,24,and then 48 track recording decks became available it became increasingly difficult for each studio to have it's own unique sound.The once unique sound of each studio
was changed to a more homoginized sound and it became difficult if not impossible to tell where
a record had been recorded without looking at the album credits.
Thirty three years ago the first inexpensive home recording devices were released upon an unsuspecting public.I purchased one of the very first.It was called-"The Teac
-124 sync-caset".I paid $239.00 for it from a discount warehouse in N.Y.C..The Recordings
i made on this machine had incredibly great sound quality.In fact at times we{The Look's} listened in dis-belief ! Is that really us playing and singing on that tape .It was hard for us to believe we could make recordings that sounded as great as the one's we heard played back
to our ears on headphones.I had a strong feeling that something else was going on.I worked extremly hard to get the best and most powerful sound you could possibly get From this simple,but at the time,revoulutionary piece of recording equipment-But it was more than that that made all the recordings that i ever made on this machine sound as great as they did.I can only explain it in one word-Magic !

The liberty's takin' by publishing company's,Film Studio's,and revisonist authors,
including screenplay writers have never in the entire history of the entertainment industry taken the kind of liberties and the degree to which they have takin' them as has been the treatment of Lewis Carrol's two storys'-"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and
"Through the Looking Glass".From Walt Disney's compending of the two story's into
one and calling it "Alice in Wonderland" to Tim Burton following suite with his up
coming release of the same name.When you combine the two stories everything
that was great about the stories when they were published as two completly separate
stories-is completely lost.Every great part of the individual stories is either omitted
completely or told is such a way that the author never intended and indeed make's
absolutly no sense.How do i know this ? You might ask.I know it from studying
Carrol's life intensly and also from studying the two seperate storys very intensly
for a very long period of time.Other than "Alice" being in both stories and both
stories being written by Carrol-they haven't anything in common.One involve's
falling down a rabbit hole{a Black hole} and the other is a playable chess game
which actually make's perfect sense when each chess piece is moved as the story
reveals the move's-and what do you know-Carrol fit a perfectly played chess game
into a story which most people don't even realize is a chess game.It's to Carrol's
credit as quite an astute mathmatician -that he was able to pull the wool over
everyone's eye's for such a long period of time.
Since a compedium of the two stories is such a butchery of Carrols intensly,
well thought out literature-to the extent that people think of it only as a clever
non-sense fairy tale for children-i can only repeat what i have stated before.
The two story's that Carrol wrote for the real Alice-upon her request-and that of
her two younger sisters-was never meant for mass consuption for children.The
only children who would have understood the way in which carrol made fun of
well know writers,philosophers and politicians would be the Liddel sister.These
were not ordinary children.Thier father held one of the highest posts at Oxford-
and so the Liddel sisters had Genuis IQ's even as small children.They understood
every mockery of an Oxford know-it all and reconized all the places that are
reffered to in code-and that carrol poked fun at.Children didn't buy the books-
intelligent adults did.They may have read some parts of it to thier children-but
the most fun to be had in the story's was recieved by adult's who knew only
to well the Oxford assholes that Carrol made a mockery of.The books then were
more of a scathing inditment of Oxford's and other English gentlemens pompous
Acting out and hypocripsy,especially Politicians.
That even the victums of Carrols poisen pen didn't recognize themselves-only
made the story's even more funny to Carrol and the Liddel sisters;as well as a few
wise adults.
In sumation-The two books Lewis Carrol wrote for the Liddel Sisters should
never be mixed together.Doing this ruins the genuis of both story's.

and once did i ask ? a simple one hour-Did the speed of

Some people have very definate idea's about where God is.I recall speaking about
evangelism,of all things,to a group of suburbanite's in an inner-city church building where
they meet once a week.Otherwise they never go near the place and want nothing at all to do
with anybody who lives in the neighbour-hood,which is a poor one.Evangelism {for them}
concerns India,Brazil, and Ghana.I happened to ask these evangelistic people if they had ever

The Enigma of De Chirico's Anonymity

Before Dali,Breton,Magritte,and before Piccaso's and others cubism,De Chirico had
allready painted the forerunners of what would become modern surrealistic painting.
Though called Meta-physical painting what De Chirico had achieved before any other
was nothing less than a world as Surreal and seemingly unreal as anything ever
produced by the Surrealist's Painters at a latter date.Futhermore,De Chirico 's paintings
have an other worldly ghostly quality that one doesn't find in the surrealism that was to

surrealism-it is just to say-or state as fact that De Chirico broke the glass shield of
realistic based painting first-in the most moving and unique Stylization technique's.
That he is not known for this is the mistake.Perhaps when one study's the
surrealism of the 20th century we should remember from now on to start with De
Chirico.We will all be the better off for it.

We are survivors of a great war.Thou it's begining was never officially declared-it has
been raging on-all through our lives.For as long as any of us has known.I remember my
foster brother Eric.A small man,with blonde hair.Together we fought so many battles with
music and humor.The last i heard of him-he was in central America.No-one has heard a word of him since.Perhaps he died there.I'll never know.Still to me,he will allways be a survivor.
When no one else believed in me-he still did.So together we became artists for the record
book's.Oh yes,we made our mark on this country.One that it will not soon forget.
And Johnny,dear sweet Johnny.Eric insisted we ask him to be our drummer.I
didn't think he'd he'd be interested but somehow Eric knew he would.He was the best
drummer we ever had and the best warrior.He helped us win many battle's-a brave soul
our Johnny.All the bands i had listened to growing up in California he had in his collection.
He saw me playing in Hollywood 10 years ago.There he was with his brother Red who i knew
from when we had stayed with his family in La Puente,recording our first record in 1980.
What day's those were ! Seeing our dreams come true,Eric,Johnny and I.All still young-just 23-
Brave Boy's becoming brave Men in a war that still rages.How we fought as brothers,An Army
of Artist's.May we live on forever-the war continues.Even as we grow old the battle's are
still new.They await you young artists,of the next generation.Good luck in your cause.We
carved away through the Jungle for you.Follow it to Glory you brave young artist's of this
new century.And be Proud.For the cause you have chosen is perhaps the greatist.Fight on-

Why Art and Philosophy Have Unequaled Value in Human Affairs

The first signs of humans moving towards civalization and culture are all related to
Art{Cave Paintings,Anicent Flutes} and belief systems{Life After Death,Buriel of the Dead,
With Ceremoniel Attachments}.Humans first buried thier dead ancestors with valuble jewelry,
Clothing,and Ceremoniel Objects whose only purpose could be to assisist them in the the After-
Life.This is how we know we know primative cultures on thier stairway towards civalization had
some form of religous practices.So we know that other than the discovery of fire and man's first
crude tools for hunting and craft-making,spiritual beginings were the first real sign that man
possessed a brain which you could define as having an inner soul or at least the capacity to
intellectualize such thoughts as,The Meaning of Life,Respect for the Dead,and other idea's which
spread quickly among the relativly small population of humans who lived in ancient times.

PartII The Journey Would Have Been Impossible

It is without a doubt man's ability to philosophize and create art that represented man's
first philosophical ideas that was the catalyst for the Giant leap in human intelligence that
eventually lead to the complex patterns of thought humans are capable of thinking today.
It's been a long journey !
This is why philosophy and Art play such an important part in the brains ability to arrange incredibly complex sets of thinking ability's-to ponder questions that before man's ability to
philosophize and create representative art and abstact art that in it's own way represented and
therefore preserved what man's thinking had taught him about the nature of the world and the nature of his own life and mind.Not only is Art and Philosophy Important ! In many ways
they are the only things that have enabled humans climb towards civalization. For without a way to analyze our life's meaning and preserve those thoughts
thru art and eventually writing.The Journey we have made would have been impossible.

BEHIND THE SUN

Art and Music serve a vital role inthe human brains development,operation,
and to govern the more primative destuctive instincts-located in an a area of the
brain where the earlist human programing for the brain resides.It's the same area
of the brain that set's off alarms when certain words are spoken that are taboo-
shit-fuck-cunt-mother fucker-still rattle are brains alarm bells as the program that interprets these words connects the dots to the taboo alarm.Despite thier
offensive nature to most people-every language-without exception-has the equivalent of these taboo words and the reaction is the same in every culture.
These words are deeply embedded in our phyche of the taboo.
This is part of the 20% estimated knowledge we possess of are world,our
universe and our minds.That leaves 4 fifths of of everything-our minds-our world
-the universe in it's entirety stil completly unknow as far as what the true nature of it is.and just what it comprises and functions as.In other words-
in spite of 200 year of unparralelled discovery in every area of science,philosophy,the arts and logic-we still have a very long way to go,indeed.
And the truth is-the fact-what we know is relativly very little-and yet most
people-if you asked them-would announce with all the confidence in the world
that we know a large ammount about the "Mystery of the Mysteries".The facts
are-We Do Not.
In Lewis Carrols "Alices Adventures Underground" Alice ponder's the
question-"What if i were to keep on shrinking forever".Would i disappear
completely or would i stop at the smallist size i could become.Sound Familiar.
This is the same question many physics experts grapple with today.150 year's
before the big bang theory was introduced and eventually became more or less
accepted as the most likely scenerio as to the begining of our Universe;Carrol
introduced the basic idea's of the big bang theory in his seemingly innocent little fairy tale.Amazing ,yes,but true.
Supose,just for example,that instead of expanding,which we are sure is the case,the "Universe" suddenly started to condense or shrink.At that point,
Alice's question would become extremly relavent for us to know the final outcome of our Universe.Would the most extreme shrinking of the Universe make it a non-entity-because it's so small we can't detect it even with the most up to date technology-or would it stop just at the smallest size it could shrink to and still have the ability of humans to detect it in some fashion.
Because of Einstien we know that space time is a varilable.His theory's
of light and space becoming curved under certain conditions,opened up a whole new book of rules of physics that the Universe must allways obey.
But even thou the "Big Bang" theory look's good on paper-Einstien refused
to give it any consideration.There was a time when another scientist stumbled
upon the theory of relativiy before Einstien and he saw that the math backed up the theory 100%.But he believed that if the theory of relativity were true all
of Newton's work would be religated to the dustbin's of history and he just couldn't stand to do that to a man he admired so much-so he never went public
with mathmatic proof that the universe is governed by relativity.
Einstien saw things differantly.Instead of nullifying all of newtons postulates he saw relativity as an extention of what newton had discovered-
even thou it did prove that many of newtons ideas were wrong about the true nature of the universe-it also proved that some of them were correct.Even Newton himself knew that there was a great deal of activity in the universe that
his ideas couldn't account for.He had no explanation for them and just considered them anomalies and that the vast majority of the universe did work
as the principles of his physics described.Unfortunatly,that has turned out not
to be the case.The futher we travel out into space ,the more tests we conduct,
and the more studies that have been made in the realm of physics point directly to einstiens relativity theory as being most like what we observe in space and what scientists have discoved in the wake of Relativity -in expieriments and in
mathmatics.If there is anything in Einstiens thoughts which the world of
physics diagree's with-it was he refusal to even consider "The Big Bang Theory"
as a possible description of how the universe began.But even thought the majority of people in the world of physics have come to believe it to be the most
likely scenario-it doesn't nessassary follow that "The Big Bang Theory" is the
absolute correct theory.You never know-some day a discovery could be made
that give's creedance to Einstien's doubt of the big bang.If that were to happen
-just imagine an Einstien with one more incredible insight into the nature of the
Universe-It certainly would boogle the mind.
Einstien's theory of relativity which states that light,energy, and matter
excert forces on our Universe that make light bend and change the speed of time were proved to be true when during a solar eclipse.As a scientific photographer watched a full solar eclipse and photographed it the photo's
showed that stars which would have been behind the sun could be seen
clearly just on the lip of the corona.The only way this would be possible is
if Einstiens theory of relativity was exactly correct in predicting the bending of
spacetime given a large enough distance to be measurable.
Thou Einstien is most famous for E=MC2 he actually won the nobel
prize for his theory of the photo-electric effect-but that's another story.

Go Ask Alice !

The Enigma of Lewis Carrol's "Alice's Adventures Underground" and
"Through the Looking Glass"
{and what alice found there}

What people refer to when they talk of "Alice in Wonderland" never has existed.
There never was a book called "Alice in Wonderland" and Mr. Carrol's real
creations mentioned in the title of this article are very rarely read in thier
original forms and even more rarely-truelly understood.Perhaps it's a good
thing to because the stories that Carrol wrote are really not appropriate for
children.There is way to much material of an adult nature that would send
many a family to the lines forming to ban the stories as Carrol originally wrote
them.
What most people have read is a compendium of the two very differant stories
watered down to the 100th degree to make it politically correct for modernity.
That's essentially what the Walt Disney movie was-and who can blame him.There
is no way Disney could have told the stories as they were written.They are far to
adult in nature,many of the referances to places and people would fall on deaf ears,
and people would not be entertained by Lewis Carrol's way of twisting the world
upside down so much as to be totally unrecognizable.No,people needed a neat and
tidy story that wouldn't upset parents or children and that's exactly what they
got.That's the "Alice" the modern public knows but the real alice{yes there was a
real alice}was a very unique person living in a completely unique time and place
and she and her two sisters just happened to fall in love with the stories told to
them by the Rev. Charles Dogson.It was alice that requested the Rev. to write the
stories down and that's really the only reason the alice stories ever made it to print.
Much of the information and inside jokes inside the original stories would only
be understood by Alice,her sisters and people who lived in the region of oxford,
england at the time.The questions about the nature of logic and nonsense and
the middle ground inbetween where Carrol mined the most humor and Wonder
from his storys has not appeared in print for nearly a Century.The only "Alice"
we get is second hand edited stories that have little if anything to do with what
Carrol and the Liddel sisters understood only to well.Maybe someday the real
Lewis Carrol stories will be printed again in thier original form but i fear it's
to late.The public has come to accept the watered down "Alice" and to bring back
the original stories in thier original text would only confuse people and cause an
uproar and we certainly don't need that.

Remembering The Dream !

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream,but in life,he was a realist.He knew
he couldn't make things right for his fellow Black Americans-Not in his own Lifetime-
-or even the next-but he also knew he had to try.He knew he would probably die trying-
Yet still he perseverded.Where do men like Dr. King come from ? Why are they so rare ?
Dr. King had a calling.A calling which he believed had truelly been ordained from a
Higher place.The Promised Land.It was a calling which allowed him to feel human weak-
ness and pain,but gave Dr. King and millions of his followers the courage to march on;
in the name of freedom.
Racism and segregation are still with us.Perhaps they allways will be,but Dr. King
left us a dream and it's up to us to Keep the Dream Alive ! That's what Martin Luther King
Jr. Day is all about.Keeping the Dream Alive.

B.Traven and "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"

B. Traven is by far the most mysterious novelist of the 20th century.His
novels enjoyed a tremendous amount of success-yet no one really knew who B. Traven
was ! One of his most successful novels "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" was made
into a highly successful film.The screenplay was written by John Huston,who also directed
the film and had as one it's stars his father,Walter Huston-who had been a very successful
actor in the 1920's,30's and 40's.Walter Huston won the academy award that year for
best supporting Actor and his son John also scored an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is a cautionary tale about how gold and in turn
Greed-can have fatal consequeces especially for some individuals-who seem more prone
to the delusional thinking that come's when "Greed" take's complete control over such
a persons mind.In the film version of "Treasure" this role is played by Humphrey Bogart.
Tim Holt,who had spent most of his acting career in early Cowboy films,along with
a few better parts,plays Bogart's best friend in the film.Walter Huston plays a grizzled
old miner who becomes the catalyst for the three to venture high into the Sierra Madre
Mountains of Mexico in search of gold.
During the film shoot in Mexico a stranger arrived on the set-claiming to be the
official representative of B. Traven.He hung around the set for about a week-making
suggestions as to how the movie could be more convincing by including more factual
elements about how a private gold mining venture would actually be built and run
in the time and place that the movie takes place{1920's-1930's}.No sooner did the
stranger arrive than he disappeared forever.It was only decades later that director
John Huston realized that the man who had appeared on the set was B. Traven.Even
so-just exactly who B. Traven was remained a mystery for decades.
Traven,who wrote many novels and collections of short stories-all of which sold well in
the market place also wrote what one writer called,in a special piece written for the New
York Times Book Review,"The greatist novel ever written".A fantastic book of magnificent
qualities called "The Death Ship".As great as "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is-"The
Death Ship" is even greater.Much of the story is based on B. Travens own expierience as
merchant mariner.Which brings me back to the question-who was B. Traven.
B. Traven,it turns out was non-other than Rhett Maurett,the son of a wealthy family
who became a radical in post world war one Germany.He published a radical newspaper
called "The Brick Burner" which brought him unwanted attention from the authorities.
He ended up being arrested and and sentanced to Death.Somehow he managed to escape and
he jumped a Tramp Steamer headed towards Tampico,Mexico.It was just outside of Tampico
in the shadow of an old pyramid,that Traven wrote "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre".
No one knows the true origin of the story-whiether it's drawn from a real legand or if Traven
just made the whole thing up.Whatever the case-it's a classic story-and Traven's Novel is
Also a classic-and oh yeah-so is the movie.

Thou it's been out for a while now-it's worth checking into "Duffy's"-Rockferry CD-The young
blonde english soultress-her ultra-catchy hit "Mercy" is contained there upon-and is sure to
give hours of listening pleasure;along with other with standout tracks "Distant Dreamer",
Delayed Devotion",title track "Rockferry"{a town}and others.She's a very unique and powerful
singer and she and her crack band also put on one hell of a show recently on "Austin City Limits".
If you miss Dusty Springfeild and Sandy Shaw give Duffy a try,she's sure to please.

Since Brian Wilson was niether a surfer nor a hot-rodder where did he get the information
to inform song's like "Little Deuce Coupe" which contains a bevy of Auto Details such as "Flat-
Head Mill","Walk a Thuderbird"."She"the car"Blowsem' outta the water like there standen' still"
and "Gets rubber in all four Gear" and there's one more thing-"She's got the pink slip daddy".
How could a non Hot rod-der know such details? and a non-surfer the surfer speak?
We'll it's more than likely that at least some of it came from younger brother Dennis-"The Beach Boy's" drummer-and busybody of the wilson clan-the only one who really did surf and
more than likely engaged in some upspirited driving as well.However it worked,Brian got alot of
real lowdown about surfing and hot-rodding and imparted it musically in some strong and beautiful way's.Even as late as "Don't Worry Baby" Brian is still fixated on drag racing but it's never sounded this musically incredible and much of it has to do with the close relationship
between Brian and Dennis and thier admiration of each others skills and knowledge.They both
spoke of it often and Dennis gave much of the credit to Brian for all that he learned from Brian
about production-when he himself produced his own first solo album-the incredible "Pacific
Ocean Blue"-1977.It's the greatist solo album of all the individual brothers that has ever been
released.A truelly remarkable record that's more worth tracking down.Not bad for little
Brother Dennis-not bad at all.

"Guitar Man"-Bread-writer-David Gate's-#11-1972

Strangly enough,it's not either one of Bread's guitarists reeling-off the cool Wah-Wah
Solo on Guitar Man but Bread's Bassist and longtime L.A. Session Man Larry Knechtel.Gate's
desribes how both he and the other Bread Guitarist Jame's Griffen both gave it thier best shot and didn't feel like they got what they were looking for.So they offered Knechtel a pass at it-
he hooked up a little wah-wah pedal he owned and laid this down in a short amount of Time.Showing the bands other two guitarists how it's done !

The Forgotten Pioneers of Rock 'n Roll

"BIG JOE TURNER"

Big Joe Turner was a veteran of the Kansas City Music Scene for many years.
He started clear back in 1938 when Kansas City was the wildest and most corrupt
city in the United States.Because of the "anything goes" attitude of those years
Kansas City had more Nightclubs with Live Music than probably any city in the
world.The music that came out of Kansas City was as wild as the city itself-
many great artists spent time honing thier skills in Kansas City from Charlie
Parker to John Coltrane for it was also mecca for jazz players as well.The
music that Big Joe Turner specialized in was upbeat R&B that was a bit
on the wild side-in that respect Big Joe fit right into the Kansas City music
scene-for the music that he was performing was essentially Rock 'n Roll-
but Joe was just about 16 years ahead of his time-but not in Kansas City !
In 1954 Big Joe released "Shake,Rattle and Roll".The song crossed over
into Billboard's Pop Charts climbing clear up to #22 and making it one the
very first Rock 'n Roll songs by a black man to reach white audiences.
In this sense Joe Turner was a pioneer of the highest order as it was nearly
impossible in those day's for a Black artist to crossover into the pop charts.
Joe's version of the song was so great,so powerful that even Elvis
couldn't top Joe's version.Now that's what i call a true pioneer and a
visionary.

note:Joe Turner had quite a few hits on the R&B charts and "Shake,Rattle and Roll"
went to #1.

The Quest Goes On

Being a voting member of the Grammy's is a great Honour,but it is also a
a great responsability.Just like political elections,one vote could make a tremendous
differance in more than just a few peoples lives.The procedure is alot more complex
than most people realize.There are many steps along the way and the rules must be
strickly adhered too.Occasionally some of rules change so one has to keep up with
any of these changes and one also one needs to keep up with what is happening in
in the music business.
Thankfully,the Grammy's can afford to help you keep up with the happenings in
the music business thru deals that members are a allowed with music publications
and other entities.Some publications even give members free subscriptions.Thanks
to this i know more about stage and recording equipment than i ever have.I also
am informed as to which tours are the most successful each month and who's recording
where and with what equipment and producer.
Some things change as you grow older but i'm still as curious as ever to learn new
things about the world of music and how it gets made.The quest goes on.

IT APPEARS TO BE VERY CLOSE TO THE EARTH AND JUST TO THE LEFT
ABOUT ABOUT 2 AND A HALF FULL MOON LENGTHS IS A VERY BRIGHT
VENUS THAT ALSO APPEARS TO TO BE SO CLOSE TO THE EARTH THAT
YOU COULD REACH OUT AND TOUCH IT.THEY ARE BOTH JUST ABOVE THE
HORIZEN AND YOU CAN SEE THEM BOTH SHINING VERY BRIGHTLY WITH
YOUR UNAIDED EYES.
JUST TO THE RIGHT AND MORE DIRECTLY STRAIGHT UP IS A CLUSTER
VERY BRIGHT STARS-ONE WHICH APPEARS TO BE THE LITTLE DIPPER.
BUT THERE ARE MANY OTHER STARS AS WELL ALL SHINING VERY BRIGHTLY.
IT'S QUITE AN IMPRESSIVE SIGHT AND DEFINATLY WORTH CHECKING OUT.

Forgotten Pioneers of Rock 'n Roll

There are many artists who pre-date the first rock 'n roll era of the 1950's that can be sited
as being the forerunners of rock 'n roll.For my money one of the most significant is Louis
Jordan.He had a long sussessful career with numerous hit's-Caldonia-Saturday Night Fish Fry-
Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'-Beware !-just to name a few.His band The Typhony Five
were topnotch and they toured for nearly two decades-so why isn't Louis
Jordan more well known?Probably because for later generations he was so far ahead of
his time. His music is nearly %100 rock 'n roll but the peak years of his popularity were
between big band swing and R&B bands and the first rock 'n roll era-and he tends to get left out
of both catagory's.
One thing for sure,there was no shortage of greatness in Louis and his bands music.It's as
rocking as can be.The songs are all top notch-Inventive-Cool-Hip-Funny and occasionally
Sad-sounds like rock 'n roll doesn't it? Your damn right.

notes:Louis Jordan was the lead singer of his band and played saxaphone{and several other
instruments}.Chuck Berry has said Louis and his Band were one of his main inspirations
and he is also noted to be an early rap stylist,with many of his song's being spoken in classic and
extremly entertaining jive talk,telling story's that give insight to the culture of the time and that are still relevant today.

MOVIE FLASHBACKS-FORIEGN FILMS

Inmar Bergman's

"Wild Stawberries"

Directed by Ingmar Bergman

For american audience's,'Wild Strawberries" is probably the most assessable foriegn
film ever made.It's stricktly a coincedence that it also happens to be one of the great-
ist-if not the greatist foriegn film ever made.
The theme's in the film are universal.Missunderstandings that are present in a
family that have been years in the making aren't brought out into the light until it's old-
est member,a Doctor,is called in his old age to recieve an honer from his University for
all his years of service.His daughter in-law,who's having some difficulty's which involve
her husband,the Doctors son,ends up accompanying the doctor to the ceramony.
During the the long car trip many of the doctors and his daughter-in-laws perceptions
of the family are brought to light.By the films end they know and like each other in a way
that would not have been possible before.So it explains family issue's and the tendancy of
family's not to talk about them in a way that any family member can relate to.Bergman
is a genuis at explaining complex issue's which every human being must confront in thier
live's.Here he just happen's to do it in away that is easy for anyone to understand.The film
is not dark in an overall sense,nor is it strange.It's an easy film for anyone to understand
because we all have a family and family issue's are universal with no borders.
The foriegn stylings of the film,dreams brought to life,which are one of Bergmans
favorite tools,in this film are easy to understand-It doesn't take an intellectual mind to
get thier meaning.

HOW BOB DYLAN CHANGED JOHN FOGARTY'S MIND

"Creedence Clearwater Revival" is probably the closest thing America ever had
of equal artistic strength to "The Beatle's".So it should come of no surprise that John
Lennon once stated that they were his favorite American Band.After CCR broke
up in 1971;John Fogarty,the groups lead singer and songwriter released several solo
Projects,One an album of covers with John playing all the instruments and going
by the name of "The Blue Ridge Rangers" and the other a proper solo album.Then
Fogarty,for a number of reasons,went on hiatus for nine years.In 1984 he released
"Centerfield" as John Fogarty and had a great success as he seemed to return
at full strength to the music world and fans and the press welcomed him with open
arms and a multitude of well deserved praise and recognition of being one of America's
finest songwriter's and performer's.His next album release didn't fare quite as well
and Fogarty went on hiatus again-this time for 11 years.
All this time Fogarty was living with the results of a terrible contract that CCR had
Signed with Fantasy Records.The bulk of the profits from John Fogarty's many hit songs
went to Fantasy-and he didn't have control of his own music.It was a bad situation.
Eventually Fogarty would get his music back but it was along,long time in coming.
In the mean time Fogarty refrained from playing any of the CCR material at his concerts.
Bob Dylan noticed this as he watched one of John's Show's.He made a decision to talk
to John Fogarty.He said to John that he must start playing "Proud Mary" or people
would "start thinking that Ike and Tina Turner wrote it".Fogarty knew Dylan was
right.He stopped boycotting his own music and began to play the CCR songs again
including "Proud Mary" and his fans went wild.John Fogarty of CCR and John Fogarty
The solo artist were rejoined and when Fantasy Records was sold to new owners-
Fogarty ended up back onthe label,only this time with a fair and decent contract.
It took along time-but finally things were righted,with just a little help from Bob Dylan.

The Kennedy Years-In Honer of Teddy Kennedy

My lifetime has co-incided with the Kennedy years.John Kennedy
was the first president i was aware of.It seemed like one day we were saying the
pledge of alligence looking at the American flag and a Photograph of John Kennedy-
in first grade,in San Fransisco and the next day school was canceled because
our president had been assasinated.I remember sitting in front of a Black and
white TV watching the funeral procession-I was 5 years old-but i'll never forget
that feeling of tradegy and darkness.But the Kennedy's carried on.
Next in line was Bobby Kennedy.An elagant speaker with a strong moral
compass for the value's we hold highest in American Society.Equality,Freedom,
and a willingness to give your life to try and help those less fortunate than himself.
Then Bobby was taken away in the same senseless way his brother had been.
That left only Teddy.Teddy gave maybe the best speach ever givin' by any
of the Kennedy brothers on the occasion of his brother Bobby's funeral.In his eulogy-
One of the most moving speach's in american history.I started to think maybe
Teddy had greatness too.I was 11 years old.
Yesterday Teddy Kennedy died.Thou he lost his bid for the presidency-as
a senator for 5 decades his impact on american politics-in the long run-turned out
to be bigger than either of his brothers John and Bobby.I,nor did many other people
see that coming.Teddy Kennedy by the fortune of his longevity and the courage and
wisdom of his character-has left an impact on american politics and policy that only
a few other americans have achieved in the entire lifespan of our nations existance.
Through triumph and tradedy Teddy never stopped working to make america the
best country on earth.We have much to thank him for and show graditude to him for.
Teddy made the long haul.He wasn't a shooting star.But his wisdom is a beacon of
light that will endure the age's.

HE'D JUST GET BORED-AND MOVE ON TO SOMETHING ELSE-SO HE
LEFT MANY PROJECTS UNFINISHED.YET STILL SOMEHOW THE MONA
LISA'S FAME LIVES ON.

IN CLEARLAKE,IOWA IS ALLMOST AN IDENTICAL POLAR OPPOSITE OF WHAT
THE REAL BUDDY HOLLY WAS LIKE.PEOPLE THINK OF HOLLY AS A NERD-WHEN
IN FACT HE WAS ONE OF THE HIPPEST CATS AROUND WHEN IT CAME TO HIS

VERSION OF "THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER".MANY PEOPLE WERE WAY TOO
BLOWN AWAY BY JIMI'S TAKE OF THE "BANNER" THAT JIMI'S INTENT WAS NEVER
EVEN THOUGHT OF.THEY JUST ASSUMED THAT LIKE EVERY OTHER ARTIST THAT
PLAYED AT WOODSTOCK,JIMI WAS AGAINST THE WAR IN VIETNAM AND HE WAS
MAKING A STATEMENT OF PROTEST.THIS HOWEVER TURNS OUT NOT TO BE THE
CASE.JIMI WAS PARA-TROOPER IN THE ARMY AND AS A RESULT OF HIS ARMY
TRAINING HE WAS IN ALL LIKELYHOOD THE ONLY ARTIST TO PLAY AT WOODSTOCK
WHO'S VIEW'S WERE PRO-MILITARY.HIS RENDITION OF THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER;IT TURNS OUT,WAS NOT IN PROTEST BUT IN PATRIOTISM.NOW THAT,AS
ARLO GUTHRIE WOULD SAY "IS PRETTY FAR OUT".IN REALITY,IT'S TYPICAL OF

AFTER WE HAD DESTROYED THE WORLD-IT WAS THOUGHT
